"Killer": A Painting of Pain and Advocacy

In my latest work, titled "Killer", I delve into the heartbreaking consequences of holding orcas and other marine mammals in captivity. This painting, depicting a killer whale with a collapsed fin is a visceral representation of the suffering experienced by these majestic creatures. The inspiration for "Killer" comes from the tragic story of Tilikum, the orca whose life in captivity at SeaWorld ended in heartbreak and tragedy.

Tilikum’s Story

Tilikum was captured from the wild at a young age and eventually sold to SeaWorld, where he spent the remainder of his life under oppressive conditions. His confinement and the mistreatment he endured led to several tragic deaths, including those of his trainers. Tilikum's story is a stark reminder of the consequences of keeping such intelligent and social animals in unnatural environments.

The Message Behind the Artwork

Through "Killer," I aim to shed light on the broader issue of marine mammal captivity. The collapsed fin in the painting symbolizes the physical and emotional toll that captivity inflicts on these animals. In the wild, orcas’ dorsal fins are tall and straight, but in captivity, many suffer from conditions that cause their fins to collapse—a visible sign of their distress.

I wanted to add a stark contrast between the brightly coloured background acting as a façade to hide the pain being experienced by the Orca in the middle of the painting with it's collapsed fin to represent the show that SeaWorld and similar organisations put on to hide what's going on behind the scenes.

A Call for Change

The treatment of orcas and other marine mammals in captivity is a grave injustice that needs to be addressed. It is crucial for us to question and reconsider our support for practices that exploit animals for entertainment.

One way to make a difference is to reconsider participating in or supporting attractions that offer interactions with dolphins or other marine animals. Additionally, supporting petitions and advocacy groups working towards the end of such practices can amplify our efforts for change.

I urge you to join me in this cause by signing this petition to remove dolphin shows from TUI's holiday booking list. By taking action, you contribute to the growing movement against animal captivity and support a future where marine mammals are respected and protected in their natural habitats.

"Killer" is a testament to the suffering endured by animals like Tilikum and a call to end the exploitation of marine mammals in captivity. I hope this painting inspires reflection and action, encouraging us all to advocate for a world where such injustices are a thing of the past.

Thank you for your support in this important cause. Together, we can work towards a future where the beauty of marine life is celebrated in the wild, not confined to tanks.
